Featured this week is the Lady Rockets Bowling Team. Congratulations to them once again for their second place finish in the Regionals and their fifth place finish in the State Championship. That is a great accomplishment for their first year as a part of Neshoba Central's athletic program. Interviewing them for this feature was a feat in itself due to shyness, nervousness, and fear of embarrassment, so thank you Rockets for overcoming your fears and sharing your experiences.

The Rockets' team consists of 7th graders Genesis Ferris and Samantha Stanfill, 8th graders Courtney McNair and Hannah Wallace, and 11th graders Shandrea Moore and Marissa Stanfill, along with their coach, Mr. Blount. Except for the Stanfill's, this was everyone's first experience with competitive bowling.

Genesis is enjoying the high school team and bowling in general. She likes "the feeling you get when you bowl", that all her friends are on the team, and that everyone gets along well. Since being on the team, she has learned how to compete and how to handle the stress. For her the experience at competition was "like competing against friends, but friends you haven't seen in a while." Genesis felt excited for the Lady Rockets to do so well their first year and hopes the program will continue.

Although Samantha has been bowling competitively and for leisure for over six years, she still finds it entertaining, exciting, and fun. She is enjoying the high school bowling team because it is fun, you meet new people, and "we have a good coach." She has learned that you won't always be the better bowler but don't be discouraged. "You still try to beat them," she said. High school competition has been fun, exciting, and nerve racking for Samantha because "you don't know if you'll do good or bad." The Lady Rockets doing so well their first year made her feel "awesome and excited." She wants Neshoba Central to continue the program and for more students to be interested in participating.

Shandrea is enjoying everything about bowling from learning how, to getting strikes and spares, to winning. She is glad to have the high school team. "I don't have any other sport", she said. Being on the team she has learned to have a positive attitude, that every frame is different, and to have fun. She found her experience with competition "interesting." The team's first year accomplishments made her feel good and realize what can be done when you put your mind to it. For the future of the Rockets, Shandrea would like for more students to be involved and to be able to travel more for matches.

Marissa has been bowling for about 11 years for leisure and competition. She likes many things about the sport, especially the feeling and sound of getting a strike. She is glad to be a part of the high school team for the opportunity to be with friends, compete with other schools, and "play the sport I love." She says she has learned teamwork and "you're only as good as the rest of the team." Her experience with the high school competitions was "louder" than other types of competitions she has been to but otherwise the same. Marissa was exhilarated by the Rockets' achievements making her want to do better next year. She wants Neshoba Central "to make it back to state and win."

Coach Blount has enjoyed being a part of the brand new sport for Neshoba Central. Besides the competition, he has liked coaching the bowling team to learn something new. "Everything about bowling is wide open and a learning experience for me," he says, "from how lane conditions effect the bowlers to when and how to make adjustments." The experience of the competitions was so new to him and the kids that he was able to enjoy watching their reactions. Also, being able to go to the competitions enabled him to talk with other coaches and get new ideas. Having coached or been a part of the school's traditional sports, he is used to having a network of people. He is glad bowling is offering him the opportunity to meet a new network of people.

For the Lady Rockets' first year achievements, Coach Blount was very pleased and complimentary. "I am proud of them. They worked hard, took it seriously, and improved their average from Regionals to State," he said. He hopes the success of the bowling team will bring out more interest and participation.

Courtney and Hannah were unavailable to give their experiences.

The Neshoba Central Rockets Bowling Team hopes to have try-outs in May before school is out. Be listening for the announcement.
