The Leake Academy Lady Rebels took an impressive pair of victories this past week in prep basketball action.

The Lady Rebels defeated Simpson Academy 56-35 and Madison-Ridgeland Academy 58-49 in double overtime. The Lady Rebels entered the week with a 9-3 record.

“It was a big week for us,” Coach Amanda Hatch said. “We really played hard, especially in the MRA game. Both teams were in foul trouble. When we got to the overtime period, we were able to pull away.”

The Leake Academy boys defeated Simpson Academy 81-73 in double overtime. The Rebels then dropped a 72-43 decision to Madison-Ridgeland Academy.

The Rebels entered the week with a 5-2 record.

Leake Academy plays three games this week, including two district games. They were to host Starkville on Tuesday, visit Canton Academy on Friday, and then visit Adams County Christian School in Natchez.

The Lady Rebels took the early lead and never looked back as they soundly knocked off Simpson Academy.

The Lady Rebels led 16-3 after the first quarter. Leake Academy outscored the Lady Cougars 13-7 in the second quarter to go up 29-10 at the half. The Lady Rebels had a 26-25 scoring edge in the second half as they wrapped up the win.

Sydni Tangle led with 17 points while Bailey Breedlove added 11.

The Lady Rebels outscored Madison-Ridgeland 13-4 in the second overtime period to claim the victory.

Leake Academy led 38-26 after the third quarter. MRA outpointed the Lady Rebels 19-7 in the final stanza to tie the game at 45-45 after regulation time ended.

The score was the same after the first overtime period. Then the Lady Rebels took the momentum and the lead to claim the win. Tangle sparked the offensive surge by hitting a pair of three-point shots and some free throws.

Tangle led with 23 points while Kelsey Tangle added 11 and Clancy Scott scored eight.

The Leake Academy boys prevailed in double overtime to knock off Simpson Academy.

Leake Academy took a 28-25 halftime lead. The Cougars came back to take the lead 40-39 at the end of the third quarter. The Rebels outscored Simpson 22-21 in the final quarter to leave the game tied at 61-61.

Both teams scored eight points in the first overtime and the score stood at 69-69. The Rebels then put in 12 points in the second overtime while holding Simpson to four points.

Will Watkins led with 23 points while Clayton Malone added 17. Daniel Young and Matthew Kea both scored 11 and Matt Clair scored 10 points.

The Patriots proved to be too much for the Rebels to handle as they led 40-25 at the half. MRA outscored Leake Academy 32-18 in the second half.

Clair led with 13 points.

“We have toughened up our schedule,” Coach Phil Shepard said. “Playing these tough games now will prepare us when the playoffs start in February.”
