Both Leake Academy teams split a pair of games in prep basketball action last week.

The Leake Academy girls opened the week with a 69-48 win over Simpson Academy. They then dropped their first loss of the season, falling 31-24 to Lamar School on the road. The Lady Rebels entered the week with a 9-1 record.

The Rebels lost 64-42 to Simpson and bounced back to beat Lamar 72-49. Saturday games at Adams County Christian School in Natchez were cancelled. The Leake Academy boys entered the week with a 4-2 record.

Leake Academy begins district play Tuesday night when they visit Starkville Academy. The Rebel teams will host Lamar School on Friday and North Delta on Saturday.

After a close first quarter, the Lady Rebels started pulling away from Simpson.

Leading 20-15 after the first quarter, Leake Academy outscored Simpson 15-11 in the second quarter and led 35-26 at the half. Leake Academy outpointed Simpson 19-10 in the third quarter to carry a 54-36 lead into the final period where they held.

During the fourth quarter, Sydni Tangle went down with a knee injury. She finished the game with 26 points and eight assists while Hannah Smith scored 10 points. Her playing status going into the week was unknown.

The Lady Rebels were playing without Sydni Tangle as they ran into a very good Lamar School team.

Then during the first quarter, guard Kelsey Tangle went out with an injury. The Lady Rebels held a 19-18 halftime lead. But in the third quarter, Lamar held them to one point while putting in nine. Lamar led 27-20 heading into the final quarter where both teams scored four points and the Lady Raiders won the game. Molly Davis led with eight points and Clancy Scott added seven.

“We had a cold shooting night where nothing would fall,” Coach Amanda Hatch said. “We have some injuries but we have out girls who can play. Someone is going to have to step up.”

The Rebels fell behind early and were never able to catch the Cougars.

Simpson went up 32-23 at the half. Leake Academy made it closer in the third quarter and trailed 47-36 heading into the fourth quarter. But the Cougars held on for the victory.

Clayton Malone led with 21 points while Daniel Young added 11.

Clayton Malone scored 22 points to lead the Rebels in their win over Lamar School last Thursday.

The Rebels held a 32-18 lead at the half. The Leake Academy limited the Raiders to eight points in the third quarter while putting in 20. The Rebels carried a 52-38 Lead into the final quarter where they outpointed the Raiders 21-6 to take the win.

Will-Lawson Harkins added 13 points and Ben Harrison scored 10.
