The 2018 football season comes to an end this weekend with the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s championship games to be played at M.M. Roberts Stadium on The University of Southern Mississippi campus in Hattiesburg.

Three championship games will be played Friday and three more will be decided on Saturday.

You may think of football season starting in August, first with practices that are held in the summer heat. Fans, coaches and players get a taste of football with the jamboree games. That’s followed by an 11-game schedule that runs through October and seems to fly by.

Usually, the weather is still very warm until the final couple of games.

District champions are decided along with the rest of the playoffs teams. Teams advance and seasons end each week. Then it comes down to the final week of championship games.

For most teams, football season actually starts a week or so after the last one ends. Coaches have their players in the weight room, lifting and doing conditioning. Last year’s younger kids get bigger. Every team begins with the same goal, to win a state championship, regardless of whether they have a realistic chance. At this point, every team is undefeated.

They hold spring training in April and May, play some sort of spring game, and then launch into their summer workouts as they look forward to August when it all starts again.

There are six classifications in the MHSAA and going into this week, 12 teams are still in the running to complete their goal of winning a state championship. But only six teams will walk off the field as champions. And that’s what makes winning a state championship so special. If it happens, enjoy it because it may be a long time before your team wins another one.

Last Friday night, the North State and South State champions were decided for each classification. Here are the scores.
