Sophomore quarterback Colby Ferguson threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Union Yellowjackets to a 41-38 win over Newton County Friday night in prep football action.

“It was a good win,” Coach Brad Breland said. “We scored in the last 19 seconds of the game and pulled it out. We have a lot of work to do on defense but it was certainly a step in the right direction.”

The Yellowjackets improved to 3-2 with the victory. They host Madison St. Joseph this Friday night. The Bruins stand at 3-2 after dropping a 59-10 decision to Jackson Prep last week.

Newton County got on the scoreboard when Marcus Wash scored on a one-yard run. The kick failed and the Cougars led 6-0.

The Yellowjackets came back with Ferguson connecting on a 35-yard TD pass to Jaylon Buckley. Henry Thornton’s kick was good and Union led 7-6 with 6:50 left in the first quarter.

Both teams scored twice in the second quarter. Newton County took the lead when Hayden West completed a 38-yard touchdown pass to Lamar Morgan. Cole Shimfessel kicked the extra point and the Cougars led 13-7.

Newton County scored again when Makindal Evans intercepted a Union pass and returned it for a touchdown. Shimfessel’s kick was good and the Cougars led 20-7 with 7:54 left in the second quarter.

The Yellowjackets responded. First Kenyon Clay ran 34 yards for a touchdown. The Ferguson scored on an eight-yard. Thornton was true on both extra point kicks and Union led 21-20 at the half.

The lead went back-and-forth through the second half. The Cougars scored first when West ran eight yards for a touchdown. The try for two failed and the Cougars led 26-21.

Union came back as Ferguson scored on a one-yard run. The kick was no good and the Yellowjackets led 27-26 with 5:12 left in the third quarter.

This set up a busy fourth quarter. Wash scored on an 11-yard run to give the Cougars the lead again with 10:43 left in the game, The pass failed and Newton County led 32-27.

Ferguson brought the Yellowjackets back when he completed a 73-yard TD pass play to Kenyon Clay. Thornton kicked the extra point and Union led 34-32 with 10:01 left.

The Cougars drove down the field and scored again when West ran in from one-yard out. The run failed and the Cougars led 38-34 with 6:23 remaining.

Union retook the lead in the waning seconds of the game as Ferguson connected with Markus Jones on a 31-yard TD pass play with 19 seconds left. Thornton’s kick was good

Both teams had an unbelievable 27 first downs each.

Union finished with 494 total yards on offense. The Yellowjackets rushed for 315 yards on 51 carries, and completed 8-of-12 passes for 179 yards.

Ferguson had all of the passing yards. He rushed 33 times fo 164 yards, giving him 344 total yards. Jaylon Buckley rushed 11 times for 99 yards. Kenyon Clay had 47 yards on four rushes and caught three passes for 99 yards, giving him 144 total yards. Defensively, Terrance Swindall had 11 tackles while Peyton Posey had 10 tackles.

Newton County had 207 rushing yards on 44 carries and completed 6-of-13 passes for 159 yards.

The Cougars dropped to 1-4, They visit Enterprise this week.
