Choctaw Central will have a new head football coach and head boys basketball coach when the new school year opens in August.
Brent Farmer has been named the boys basketball coach while Jerrod Thompson has been named head football coach. Athletic director Walter Wilson made the announcement this week after receiving final approval from the school system.
Both Farmer and Thompson are graduates of Choctaw Central where they both played football and basketball. They have served as assistant coaches there for the past seven or eight years.
"It's their turn," Wilson said. "They have graduated from Choctaw Central. They have worked hard as assistant coaches and have put in their time. Now they are getting the opportunity to show us what they can do."
Farmer has been an assistant basketball coach for eight years.
"I have worked under Coach Wilson, Coach Thomas and Coach Slaughter and have learned from each of them," Farmer said. "Now I feel like they have given me a good foundation to build a program on. I'm ready to hit the ground running."
Coach Farmer said tryouts have recently concluded and he would be announcing the team for next season in a few days. Farmer and the Warriors will get their first taste of action in June when they travel to Cheyenne, Okla., to participate in the Jim Thorp games.
Coach Thompson was the acting head coach through spring football drills and he is excited about the team's potential.
"We had a lot of work and enthusiasm," Thompson said. "The kids have worked hard in the weight room. We had good workouts and I thought we played well in the jamboree."
Coach Thompson said the team would continue to lift weights during the summer and had plans to attend a camp at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
"We just need to have a good summer so we can get ready for the upcoming season," Thompson said.
Thompson was also the head baseball coach this past spring.
