Time flies.

This is Fair week, and next Monday, the high schools will begin fall football drills. That means it won't be long until the start of high school football.

The 2014 season is going to be an interesting one for the teams in the Democrat readership area. There will be two new head coaches. Longtime Alabama head coach Stacy Luker has taken over as head coach at Neshoba Central. And Jerrod Thompson has become the head coach of his alma mater at Choctaw Central.

Philadelphia, Union and Leake Academy are returning veteran coaching staff who will be trying to fill some holes in their starting lineups that were left by last Spring's graduation. They say the talent is there, it's just a matter of putting together on the field.

The teams won't be allowed to go out in pads until after Friday, Aug. 8. The Philadelphia Tornadoes have a tradition of going out in pads a minute after midnight following the first week in pads. Head Coach Teddy Dyess has reported some good crowds and spirited practices.

The weekend of Aug. 15 will be the first time we will get a chance to see our teams in action but it will only be for two quarter jamboree games.

On Friday, Aug. 15, Neshoba Central will host Meridian High School and Union will play Newton County in the Lake jamboree. On Saturday, Aug. 16, Philadelphia travels to Mississippi State to play in a jamboree at the Bulldogs field. The Tornadoes play New Albany at 9 a.m.

The season starts the next week with all five home schools playing at home. Neshoba Central will host Newton County, Philadelphia hosts South Delta, Choctaw Central entertains Leake Central, Union will host Nanih Waiya and Leake Academy hosts Copiah Academy.
