Solo home runs by Haley Stephens and Morgan Porter in the third inning helped lead East Central Community College's softball squad to a 6-3 victory over East Mississippi Community College Sunday in first-round action of the MACJC State Softball Tournament hosted by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston.

The Lady Diamond Warriors, then dropped a 7-3 decision to Gulf Coast in the next round of the single elimination event.

Jones County would then defeat Gulf Coast to win the state championship.

Against EMCC, Porter, a freshman outfielder from Enterprise, also contributed an RBI double.

Stephens added an RBI to her total for the today.

The freshman designated hitter is a product of Union High School.

Ty Buckley also had a productive outing at the plate, as the freshman infielder from Neshoba Central High School belted a double and single and collected an RBI.

Other hitters were freshman infielder Amber McBroom of Brandon and sophomore outfielder AJ Peeler of Neshoba Central, singles each.

Tenna Patterson picked up the win. The sophomore hurler from Lexington (Ala.) High School allowed three earned runs on seven hits in the seven-inning battle.

She fanned three batters and walked one.

East Central advances to the Region 23 tournament which begins Thursday in Clinton.

They play LSU-Eunice in the first round.

The Lady Diamond Warriors are now 31-15.
