ECCC basketball squads drop decisions at Hinds

MACJC South Division competition resumed on a disappointing note for East Central Community College's basketball squads who were swept at Hinds Community College Monday night in games played on the Utica campus.
The Lady Warriors were outscored by a 71-61 margin and the Warriors were edged 81-75.
Xzandra Dowd and Jaianah Matthew poured in 21 and 17 points, respectively, to lead the EC women who fell to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in league play under first-year head coach Crandal Porter.
Dowd is a 5-8 sophomore guard from Neville High School in Monroe, La., and Matthew is a 5-8 sophomore guard and product of Arkansas High School in Texarkana, Ark.
LaPorshia Mitchell tallied 15 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs who improved to 2-10.
Hinds led 38-27 at halftime.
Aquill Baynard pumped in 22 points to pace the Warriors who are still searching for their first season win under seventh-year head coach Maurice Bowie.
Baynard is a 6-8 sophomore forward from Elsik High School in Houston, Texas.
Other top scorers were Bobby Wrench, a 6-5 sophomore forward of Columbus, 12; and TeJiminon Leatherwood, a 5-7 sophomore guard from Northridge (AL) High School, 10.
Dominique Brown poured in 19 points to lead the Bulldogs who are 10-2 on the season.
EC trailed 37-35 at the break.
The Lady Warriors and Warriors continue division play by hosting Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Thursday, Jan. 17.
Game times are 6 and 8 p.m. in the Brackeen-Wood Physical Education Building.
