An opportunity for high school baseball players to display their skills will be available Saturday, July 27, when East Central Community College's Baseball Program hosts its annual MVP Showcase on the Decatur campus.

Neal Holliman, Diamond Warrior head coach, said the event is held to identify talented athletes that have either been recommended or spotted as viable prospects. He encourages prospective team members "to take advantage of this opportunity and to take a closer look at our baseball program and college."

Coach Holliman encourages pre-registration for the MVP Showcase, due to the limited space available. The registration fee is $50 per player.

Activities begin at 9 a.m. with check-in and registration for position players. Also scheduled are running and stretching exercises and a parent's meeting at 9:30 a.m., followed by a pro-type workout to test players' arm strength and fielding ability at 10 a.m. Batting practice for position players begins at 11 a.m. and is followed by registration and check-in for pitchers at 11:30 a.m. Participants who want to showcase abilities as position players and pitchers should register at 9 a.m.

East Central's baseball program experienced another successful year under Coach Holliman, as the Diamond Warriors captured the MACJC State Championship and advanced to the Region 23 Tournament en route to a 32-21 record. The talented squad was also recognized for academic excellence by finishing third in the nation. Several players were also recognized as NJCAA Academic All-Americans and MACJC Academic All-State selections.

In addition, 11 players advanced to the next level - eight with Division I programs and three on the Division II level.

Short stop Tim Anderson was selected the 17th overall pick in the Major League Baseball Draft by the Chicago White Sox. Anderson is the fifth Diamond Warrior selected in MLB draft over the past five years. He was also chosen NJCAA Male Athlete of the Year!
