Area prep baseball, softball teams take to the field

The local high school baseball and softball teams will get their seasons started with jamboree games this Saturday, and classic games the following weekend. Jamboree games last four innings and don't count on a team's record. Classic games can be counted on a team's record but are considered extra games.
Here's a look at the upcoming action for area schools that are members of the Mississippi High School Activities Association.
The Neshoba Central Lady Rockets will play in the Kosciusko jamboree on Saturday. They play Winona at 10 a.m. and Choctaw Central at 11:15 p.m. Next Saturday, the Lady Rockets will be playing in the East Webster Classic. They had earlier been scheduled to play in the Southeast Lauderdale Classic but that has been changed, due to a scheduling conflict. The Lady Rockets will take on Amory at 3:30 p.m. and Bruce at 5 p.m.
After their game with Neshoba Central, the Choctaw Central girls will play another jamboree game with Yazoo County at 2 p.m. The following Saturday, Choctaw Central will play in the Northeast Park classic in Meridian against Clarkdale at noon, and Northeast Lauderdale at 4 p.m.
The Philadelphia Lady Tornadoes play two jamboree games this Saturday at Kosciusko. The Lady Tornadoes take on Winona at 12:30 p.m. and Ackerman 3 p.m. The following Saturday, the Lady Tornadoes play two classic games at Northeast Park, taking on Meridian High at 10 a.m. and Northeast Lauderdale at 2 p.m.
The Union Lady Yellowjackets will not be playing in a jamboree this weekend. They will play two classic games the following Saturday at Northeast Park against Southeast Lauderdale at 10 a.m. and Sebastopol at noon.
Cody Freeman, a former West Lauderdale and Mississippi State University baseball standout, begins his coaching career with the Philadelphia Tornadoes.
The Tornadoes will play Weir Saturday at noon in a jamboree game. The following Saturday, they will travel to Weir where they will play a couple of classic games against Ethel at 10:30 a.m., and Cleveland at 2:30 p.m. The Tornadoes open the season the following Monday in the Clarkdale tournament against Enterprise.
Neshoba Central will have a new baseball coach as well as former Union skipper Justin Stovall takes over the program. The Rockets will play two jamboree games Saturday against West Lauderdale at 10:30 a.m., and then Southeast Lauderdale at 1:30 p.m. The following weekend, the Rockets will play in the Newton County Classic against Lake on Friday at 5 p.m. and Newton County on Saturday. The Rocket junior varsity will play Newton County before the varsity game.
The Choctaw Central baseball team will not be playing a jamboree game this weekend. They will host Leake County the following Saturday for two classic games.
The Union Yellowjackets, under new head coach Dustin Hamrick, plays two jamboree games at Kosciusko this weekend. The Yellowjackets take on Kosciusko at 11 a.m. and Starkville at 12:30 p.m.
Union will play two games in the Newton County Classic the next weekend. They take on Newton County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Quitman at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
They will turn around and play Quitman the following Monday in the Clarkdale Tournament.
