Mr. Emmett L. Barnett passed peacefully from this life on June 29, 2013, at 9:30 a.m.at his home in Rankin County. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl. Interment followed at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

He was the widower of his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary Barnett, who passed away in 1995. Mr. Barnett moved from Neshoba County in the 1960's to begin his work at The Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield where he worked until his retirement in 1980. Retirement was something that Mr. Barnett enjoyed to the fullest as he was not one to sit idle. He was the ultimate outdoorsman and was always fishing and hunting. He used a climbing stand into his 80's always to get to the highest point in a tree in advance of the wild game. He was also a fisherman who supplied his family with fresh water fish fillets ready for consumption. He also had a green thumb and was known for immaculate gardens and again supplying his family with fresh vegetables. Mr. Barnett loved sports he could be seen shooting hoops well into his 80's. Most people went to school to learn but our father and grandfather went to school to play basketball. He attended sporting events for his great grandsons, and could be seen watching a game during tournament times and giving advice well into 1 a.m. in the morning on an occasion. Mr. Barnett loved his two sons very dearly and loved his extended family just as deeply. His daughter-in-laws were very dear to his heart; they were the daughters he never had! Mr. Barnett's sons will miss him extremely as they shared a special bond and unique closeness with each one. We will miss those daily phone calls to check in to discuss family, how many tomatoes he had picked that day, hunting, and fishing.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Nora Barnett; wives, Mary Barnett, and Marlene Horton Barnett; grandson, Scott Barnett; and all of his siblings.

He is survived by sons, Edgar Lee "Ed" Barnett (Cheryle) and Malcolm Barnett (Sue); grandchildren, Kenny Barnett, Robin White, Chris Galacia-Ni, and Dwayne and David Barnett; great grandchildren, Jordan and Hayden Barnett, Shea Townsend, Jessica and Nicole Galacia, Joshua and Sebastian Barnett, David Ross and Austin Barnett; great-great-grandchildren, Bailee, Addison, Anna Claire, and Ely Townsend; and his precious Yorkie "Sport" whom he loved dearly.

The family wants to express how much we sincerely appreciate Stephanie Brister and her compassionate staff at Southern Care; and his two very special care givers Ms. Angela Hilton and Ms. Phyllis Truitt for their care in his final days of a wonderful life!
