Services for Dr. John Gilbert Alexander of Union were held 2 pm, Saturday, August 25, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church of Union with burial in the Union City Cemetery. Rev. Chris Shelton and Dr. Jon Martin  officiated.

Visitation was held 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm, Friday at First Baptist Church of Union. Prior to the 2 pm service on Saturday there was a visitation from 1 pm - 2 pm, at First Presbyterian Church of Union.

Dr. Alexander, 90, died Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at his residence.

John Gilbert Alexander graduated from Union High School in 1946. He continued his education receiving his BS Degree from Millsaps College. In 1954 he received his MD Degree from Tulane University and completed his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA.

He joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at  Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina as Captain from 1955-1958. After completing his service in the United States Air Force in 1958, he made his way back to his hometown, Union, and began his long association with Laird Hospital/Family Medical Group.

During his 60 years of medical practice he served as a member of The Mississippi Academy of Family Practice, Mississippi Medical Association and Southern Medical Association. In 1972, Dr. Alexander served as Vice President of Hilltop Nursing Home. The Mississippi Chapter of the American Family Practice Association selected long-time Union Doctor, John Gilbert Alexander, as its “Physician of the Year.” He was very instrumental in the establishment of the J.G. Alexander Nursing Home in 2006. In 2008, Dr. Alexander retired from his clinic duties but remained active on the Laird Hospital staff as Senior Medical Advisor.

Dr. Alexander was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Union and served as an Elder and Clerk of the Session. He was Scout Master of Eagle Scout Troop 29.  All three of his sons are Eagle Scouts.

Dr. J.G.  Alexander initiated the founding of The Newton County Ole Miss Alumni Association in 1998. He served his community by being an active member of Union Lion’s Club, Union Chamber of Commerce, Union School Board and organizing the fundraising for the establishment of The Union Country Club.

The Union Chamber of Commerce named Dr. J. G. Alexander as Citizen of the Year in 2005 and the Lifetime Achievement Recipient Award in 2014.

Dr. Alexander has always been a strong advocate for the town of Union and surrounding communities.

Survivors: 4 Children: Karen Alexander Lawhorn and husband Bill of Germantown, TN,  David Alexander of Hattiesburg, Ross Price and wife Stephanie of Madison, Mike Price and wife Kim of Union, seven Grandchildren: Alex Lawhorn and wife Catherine of Nashville, TN, J.D. Lawhorn and wife Kelli of Nashville, TN, Mary Morgan Wade and husband Todd of Oxford, Sadler Alexander of Jacksonville, FL, Will Price and Walker Price of Madison and Beth Price of Union. Four Great Grandchildren: Lucy Lawhorn and William Lawhorn both of Nashville, Cooper Lawhorn of Nashville and McLaurin Wade of Oxford.

He is also survived by two special friends, Jennifer McElhenney and Nona Griffin.

The family wishes to acknowledge Connie Comans, Lula Roberson, Diane Gunter, Jessie Goodwin and Barbara McMullan for the special care they gave.

 Dr. Alexander was preceded in death by wives: Sue Sadler Alexander and Billie Price Alexander; parents, H.C. and Essie Mae Alexander and one brother, Harold C. Alexander.

Pallbearers: Vince McElhenney, Ricky Cumberland, Marion Whinnery, Jimmy Ogletree, Dale White, Mike Staton and Bobby Blount

Honorary Pallbearers: Dudley Barnes, Dr. Russell Belenchia, Jim Moore and Billy McCune

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to: First Presbyterian Church of Union, (P.O. Box 94, Union, MS 39365) or Union Volunteer Fire Department, (404 Bank Street, Union, MS 39365).

Milling Funeral Home of Union was in charge of the arrangements.
