United Way of Neshoba County sets $80,000 goal for 2013 drive

The United Way of Neshoba County has kicked off its 2013 campaign with a goal of raising $80,000.
Volunteers are seeking contributions and pledges to meet the goal in order to fund United Way's 17 agencies, which include parks and recreation, the Boys and Girls Club and the Christian Women's Job Corp, among others.
The local chapter was founded in the 1960s by then-Chamber of Commerce executive director Connie Sampsell and businessmen Hugh Thomasson and Albert Latting as a way to have one large charitable drive which would fund multiple agencies as opposed to several small drives throughout the year.
Through United Way, a business or individual can make just one donation, which would benefit all 17 organizations.
Volunteers are seeking donations and/or pledges over the next few weeks as almost every family in Philadelphia and Neshoba County benefits from United Way whether from an enjoyable evening at the park or from services provided by such agencies as the county ministerial association, the Center for Pregnancy Choices or the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program.
From Boy and Girl Scouting to Blair Baston Children's Hospital, the United Way of Neshoba County is there to assist financially, volunteers said.
"Ninety-nine percent of the funds raised are allocated to the local agencies supported by United Way of Neshoba County," said Chris Roake, secretary.
The remaining 1 percent pays for such things as postage.
Pledge cards can be obtained at the Community Development Partnership office at the depot at 256 West Beacon St.
