Andrew Alderson, a fourth-grade student at Union Elementary School in Union, has been selected as recipient of the 2013 Energy Smart Award for the Region V Science and Engineering Fair held recently on the campus of Mississippi State University in Starkville.

Sponsored by the Mississippi Development Authority's (MDA's) Energy and Natural Resources Division, the Energy Smart Award identifies student projects that successfully demonstrate energy efficiency, conservation and/or use of renewable resources such as solar, biomass or wind.

Alderson's award-winning entry involved the design and construction of two solar cookers to evaluate which was the most effective in demonstrating the use of solar energy, a renewable energy source.

Region V Science and Engineering Fair judges evaluated student projects according to project content, scientific thought, creativity, skill and thoroughness.

"On behalf of MDA, we offer our sincerest congratulations to Andrew for being selected as the 2013 Energy Smart Award recipient," said Karen Bishop, director of MDA's Energy and Natural Resources Division.

"We're extremely proud of each participating student and their outstanding contributions to this year's Region V Science and Engineering Fair. One of the event's most important goals is making science fun for young people."

MDA's Energy and Natural Resources Division provides a broad array of cost-effective energy efficiency programs and services to industry, government and businesses throughout Mississippi.
