A Union man was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to manufacturing marijuana in Circuit Court.

Omar Marquer, 52, of 11601 Road 127, Union, was indicted by a grand jury on a manufacturing marijuana charge in May.

In addition to the eight-year sentence, Marquer was fined $1,500 and ordered to enroll in an alcohol and drug treatment program.

Marquer was arrested in late December after an alleged assault and robbery led Sheriff's investigators to a shed in the Dixon community where a "highly sophisticated" marijuana manufacturing operation was seized, resulting in his arrest.

Sheriff Tommy Waddell said investigators believe that the marijuana was going to be shipped out of the county, maybe even to Miami.

About 40 marijuana plants were seized in the arrest.
