The Choctaw Tribal Council recently passed three resolutions requesting the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a Secretarial election regarding three separate amendments to the Choctaw Tribal Constitution.

The Secretarial election is set for Feb. 19 but to vote in this election Tribal members must first must register with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which is conducting the election.

The proposed amendments are:

• Amendment A: Resolution CHO 13-011(B): Amending Article X, Section 1(g) to eliminate the specific reference to the amount of fine and imprisonment that the Tribe may impose upon conviction of a criminal offense and replace such ref- erence to authorize any fine and imprisonment provided by the Indian Civil Rights Act.

• Amendment B: Resolution CHO 13-012(B): Amending Article VI, Sections 7 and 9 to reduce the percentage of eligible voters required to vote in a successful recall election from 75 percent to 60 percent in the case of Tribal Council representatives and the Tribal Chief.

• Amendment C: Resolution CHO 13-013(B): Amending Article IV, Sections 5 and 6 to add additional requirements to the qualifications for seeking election to the Tribal Council and to the office of Tribal Chief. Additional requirements are added relating to criminal convictions, minimum education requirements, voter registration in tribal community and endorsement by a specific number of registered voters.

Tribal members will vote on each amendment either "yes, I am in favor of this amendment" or "no, leave it the way it is."

In a message to Tribal members, Chief Phyliss J. Anderson said each member should have received a packet in the mail that contains a sample ballot and a registration form.

The deadline for registration is Jan. 29.
