A Meridian Community College student died from his injuries early Saturday morning when the truck he was a passenger in collided with a tree just outside of Philadelphia on Highway 19 South.

James Hunter Garrett, 19, of Meridian, was a passenger in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Jeffrey Weaver, 19. Weaver was not injured.

According to accident reports, the vehicle was traveling south when it veered into the northbound lane and then hit a tree. The time of the accident was around 4 a.m.

Garrett died of head trauma when the tree caved his side of the truck, according to Coroner John Stephens.

Garrett was a student at Meridian Community College and was a member of the soccer team. He was a graduate of Northeast Lauderdale where he played soccer and baseball.

The accident is still under investigation.
