Neshoba County Sheriff Tommy Waddell says that due to an increase in reported phone scams the best thing residents can do is hang up the phone.

Waddell said that they have received an increase in reports of phone scams over the past month or two.

Scammers are calling claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service, Publishers Clearing House or Social Security office. He said they will ask for personal information or ask the person to send money.

“Do not heed their requests,” Waddell said. “It is a scam. The best thing to do is to just hang up the phone.”

Waddell stressed that they are aware of the scam and doing what they can to stop the scams.
