A post service officer is now available to assist veterans and their families on Mondays and Tuesdays at the VFW Post 4396 on Highwy 16 east toward DeKalb from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Contact Post Service Officer and Senior Vice Commander Leavy Shoffner at 601-504-1529 to make arrangements to meet with him. You will need to bring proof of eligibility, such as a DD 214/215. If you do not have one a form can be filled out in order send off and receive your military records.
Thanks to a small relief fund, veterans can be assisted with any personal needs if necessary.
You do not have to be a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) to qualify, a spokesman said.
The top priority will begin with overseas combat veterans and their families, disabled veterans and then non-combat veterans as the last priority.
There will be a form as well to fill out, with a DD 214/215 to verify eligibility. If you have a bill that needs to be taken care of in the form of utilities bring it as well. These applications will be reviewed by the post officers for approval/disapproval.
Also we would like to thank Citizens Bank and Jerome Tanks for their kind donation to our relief fund, we cannot thank you enough.
If you would like to donate as well please support the poppy drive we have every year at Wal-Mart. Contact Post Commander Susan Shoffner at 601 562-1769 or Senior Vice Commander Leavy Shoffner at 601-504-1529.
One hundred percent of our relief fund goes strictly to assisting our veterans.
"We also have a building fund to help us get our building back on track, if anyone would like to donate to the VFW whether if be funds or volunteer labor to help with repairs we would greatly appreciate anything you can do to help us help our hometown veterans, Shoffner said.
If you would like to donate to the VFW you can send it to: Commander, Post 4396, Susan Shoffner, 10311 road 747, Philadelphia, MS 39350
Please state if you would like your donation to go to the relief fund or to the building fund.
"Also we have tossed around the idea of a cookbook dedicated to our veterans, whether living or dead," Shoffner said.
"If you would like to send us a recipe along with a photo of your veteran with a little bit of information about them, such as name, rank, branch of service, dates they were in service and got out of service and any other information that we may can use for the cookbook.
"You send you information to me Susan Shoffner at the above address. Please help us help our veterans."
