Friday Night Entertainment

Come one, come all and listen to the delightful music by Derrell Fulton and The Night Shift Band at the Stallo Community Center. Dance the night away to old favorites, contemporaries and music written by some of our own band members. Enjoy great company in a smoke free atmosphere. Wildfire at VFW Post

Wildfire will be playing your favorite classic Country Music every Friday night beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW Post on Highway 16 east. Jess Pickard is on lead guitar and guitar synthesizer and vocals.

On saxophone, fiddle and banjo is Danny Kirkland; lead guitar and vocals, Glynn Johnson; piano and organ and vocals, Danny Donald; drums and vocals, Bill Burkes; and guitar and vocals, Eatha Wilson. This is a smoke free, family atmosphere.

Youth football and cheer

Neshoba County Youth Football and Cheer is offering an early bird registration of $50 for football and $75 for cheerleading. Registration will be held every Saturday at 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. unless weather condition occurs. After that the price for football is $65 and cheerleading is $100. Registration will be held on the old soccer field at Northside park.

Rachel Dunn Benefit

An account has been established at The Citizens Bank for the benefit of Rachel Dunn to help with medical expenses.


The Neshoba County Farmers' Market is open and will remain open through August.

The Market is located behind the Farm Bureau office located on Highway 16 east.

The market is open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 6 a.m. until all produce is sold.

Vegetables expected to be available at the market this week include string beans, squash, cabbage, onions, potatoes, peppers, cucumbers, peas, okra and tomatoes.

Searching for Descendants

A family member is searching for descendants of William Nance, born in Kemper County Miss., in 1875, and Mollie Nance Litchfield, born in Kemper County in 1864.

They were children of Richard Davner Nance,Sr. and Mary Jane Mayo Nance.

They were brother and sister to my grandmother, Rebecca Jane (Dinkie) Nance Ferguson. Any information will be welcome.

Twelve Steps to G.R.A.C.E (Godly Recovery Applying Christ's Example) is held each Thursday evening beginning at 6 p.m. with a meal for participants with program starting at 6:30 and ending at 7:30.

School Lunches

The price for full-pay student lunches will increase from $1.75 to $2 in the Philadelphia Public School District beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.

No other meal prices will increase.

This increase will become effective on the first day of school, Wednesday, Aug. 7.

PHS Class of 1973

The 40th reunion of PHS Class of 1973 is Oct. 18-20, kicking off on Friday night at PHS 2013 homecoming game.

Truck driving Program

Earn your CDL by letting us bring the training to you at our Decatur, Louisville, and Philadelphia locations. 

To be eligible, you must be at least eighteen years old for an Intrastate License; twenty-one years old for an Interstate License; pass the DOT physical and drug screening; have no more than two moving traffic violations in the past two years; and no DUI's or reckless driving convictions in the past five years.

Classes will begin on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, for five to eight weeks. 

Cost of the class is $2,500 which includes tuition, drug test, DOT physical, all licensing fees, and job placement assistance.  Financial assistance may be available.

Johnson Reunion

Descendants of Oliver and May Spears Johnson are invited to a reunion of any family members Sunday, July 28 at 1 p.m.

Cancer Benefit Bow Shoot

A cancer benefit 3-D Bow Shoot (20 targets) will be held at Antioch Baptist Church in Union from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 27 for Mrs. Amanda Spence.

Registration is 8 a.m. and shotgun start at 9 a.m. Adults 12-year-olds and older are $25 with lunch ($20 without lunch).

Bake Sale

A bake sale will be held at Farkleberry Bridal on Friday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Money raised will go towards the Philadelphia Junior High Cheerleaders.

'Electrical Theory' Class

An "Electrical Theory Class," consisting of the Principles of AC and DC electricity used for power and controls in industrial, commercial, agricultural and residential applications is being offered at ECCC's Integrated Technologies Training Center (ITTC) located in Choctaw. The training is designed to cover topics such as Ohm's Law, Kirchoff's Law, series and parallel circuits, induction and capacitance, calculating current and voltage drops, using various electrical meters to troubleshoot and diagnose circuit problems, and electric controls that will explore the ladder logic used to safely operate machinery with the use of relays, timers, push buttons, and safety interlocks. The class is being offered through East Central Community College's Workforce Development Center.

Registration will be held on Monday, Aug. 5 beginning at 6 p.m. at ITTC.  Classes will begin on Monday, Aug. 12 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will run for twelve consecutive weeks.  Class meetings may be available simultaneously through the use of video/conferencing equipment made possible through the Community Based Job Training Grant at our Carthage and Louisville Career Advancement Centers for those living outside Neshoba County.

Blake Warren, Advanced Skills Trainer, will be serving as instructor.

Cost of the class is $175.  Financial assistance may be available.

The Multi-County Community Service Agency, Inc. will hold a public hearing in Neshoba County for the 2014 Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) and the 2014 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) on Aug. 13. The Hearing will be held in the Annex @ 268 Atkins Street/ Multi-County Community Service office beginning at 10 a.m.

The purpose of the hearing is to discuss planned changes in the CSBG and LIHEAP programs for 2014. All persons in Jasper County are encouraged to attend. Immediately following the public hearing, a Community Action Day Program will be held.
