A newspaper carrier died last week following a two-vehicle accident on Mississippi 16 east while he was delivering papers.

Tommy Ray McDaniel, 58, of 10031 Road 458, Union, died from injuries he suffered in the accident at the intersection of Mississippi 16 east and Mississippi 491 at 6:22 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, Sgt. Andy West, public relations officer for the Mississippi Highway Patrol's Troop H, said.

McDaniel, a carrier for The Meridian Star and the Clarion Ledger, was traveling south on Mississippi 491 in a 2005 Chevy Cavalier when he crossed in front of a 2000 Dodge Ram driven by Ruben M. Compton, 61, of Cotton Valley, La., West said.

"He was struck in the passenger's side by Compton," he said, noting Compton suffered non-life threatening injuries.

McDaniel was taken to Anderson Hospital in Meridian where he died the following night, West said.

"This is still an ongoing investigation," he said.

Services for McDaniel were held Friday at 11 a.m. from McClain-Hays Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial was in Herbert Cemetery with McClain-Hays Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
