Art works they created have earned recognition for 10 Neshoba Central Middle and High School students in the 2011 Youth Art competitions of the GFWC Mississippi Federation of Women's Clubs, Inc.
GFWC-MFWC Futura Club sponsored the works by the students to the GFWC-MFWC district and statewide contests. Futura and Neshoba Central schools began the joint Youth Art project, at the elementary school level, more than 27 years ago.
High and middle school students whose work competed in the 2011 GFWC-MFWC District II contest were Sari Alhabbash, Quinton Billie, Jonta Butler, Shamiski Collier, Morgan Dennis, Haden Johnson, Alexis Pyawasit-Timm, Patrick Self, Nikki Schwake, Armir Shala, Thad Skinner and Leslie Young.
All art students in the two schools were eligible to compete for entry to the GFWC-MFWC District competition. Each of the local winners received a specially designed Certificate of Achievement from the Futura Club.
Five students won first place ribbons in the district contest. They were sponsored by Futura Club to the GFWC-MFWC statewide Youth Art competition. These were Jonta Butler, Shamiski Collier, Alexis Pyawasit-Timm, Thad Skinner and Leslie Young. Art works by Butler and Skinner earned state first place ribbons and Young took a second place.
District II second place ribbons were awarded to Dennis, Shala, Billie, and Schwake. Johnson won a third place ribbon.
NCHS art teacher Gayle Lesley and Futura Arts Community Service Program Co-Chair Alene Griffith coordinated the 2011 Youth Art project. Griffith also presented Futura's gift of funds to the art program in the schools.
