Kim Mars has been appointed as the newest member of the Board of Trustees of the Philadelphia Public School District.
Mars, who will represent Ward 2 on the board, was appointed by a unanimous decision of the Board of Aldermen last week.
She and her husband, James, have two sons in the school district: juniors Abe and Fent.
Mars succeeds Carla Martin on the School Board, whose term has expired.
She has worked at Weems Community Mental Health Center for 22 years as county supervisor and mental health therapist.
Mars is excited to serve on the School Board.
"Philadelphia has been very near and dear to my heart ever since my boys started kindergarten there," she said.
"I see this as a huge responsibility and one I will not take lightly."
She hopes to bring her familiarity with the school and its day-to-day operation to the School Board.
"My boys are juniors at PHS and since kindergarten I have made every effort to be as involved as possible whether it be with academics, school clubs, or athletics," Mars said.
"In doing this I have gotten to know many of the great administrators, teachers, coaches, students and parents that make up Philadelphia School District. It is my hope that the relationships I have formed through the years will enable me to be a true representative and voice for all of these people."
It is her belief that the School Board should never be satisfied with where the school is, but always strive for improvement.
"As a district we should always strive to improve and be our best...whether it be in academics, athletics, facilities, etc.," she said.
"I look forward to being a part of helping to do that in any way I can as a board member."
Others members of the School Board are President Ron Sparnecht, Vice President Harold Coburn, Cheri Gamblin and Vetty Gates.
