Going into the construction of its Kemper County gasification plant on Mississippi 493, Mississippi Power Company officials projected that 2012 would be its most active time for construction.

MPC spokesman Verdell Hawkins told the Kemper County Board of Supervisors earlier this month that the early projection had proven accurate.

He said that 80 percent of the plant's construction costs had been confirmed or committed and that the peak number of construction employees at the site would likely occur in March of 2013.

Hawkins went over some of the highlights of the year, including the installation of the gasifier and the construction of administrative buildings. Some of the major pieces of equipment, weighing as much as a million pounds each, have been put into place, and 10 of 18 major crane lifts have already taken place at the plant site, he said.

Hawkins also said residents shouldn't be concerned when they don't see major construction taking place during the holiday. No work was scheduled from Dec. 23-Dec. 26 for the Christmas holidays and non is set to take place on Monday, Dec. 31 or Tuesday Jan. 1 in celebration of New Year's Day.
