A 74-year-old Forest woman was listed in stable condition in a Jackson hospital after being shot at a Union residence while trying to collect payment for a cell phone bill from a man in a domestic dispute, the authorities said.
The man, William Donald, 69, of 10611 Road 234, Union, was charged with aggravated assault following the incident over the weekend.
Donald is charged with shooting Ima L. Barrett, 74, of 2346 Ephesus Road, Forest, one time in the upper body with 12-gauge birdshot on Saturday, Neshoba County Sheriff Tommy Waddell said.
"She was wounded in the shoulder and chest areas," he said.
Barrett went to the residence on Road 234 in Union to try to collect approximately $300 from Donald to pay a cell phone bill, Waddell said.
According to witnesses, Barrett arrived at the residence with two others and after announcing herself she was shot once through the door, Waddell said
Barrett was carried by private vehicle to Laird Hospital in Union.
On the way to the Union residence, Donald contacted Sheriff Waddell and told him that he found an unknown cell phone on the front door of his home.
"It belonged to the victim [Barrett]," the sheriff said.
Barrett was later airlifted from Laird to the University Medical Center in Jackson where she was listed in stable condition.
Donald was arrested without incident.
