Friday is the deadline for candidates to qualify for the municipal party primaries in May.

Candidates may qualify now until 5 p.m. Friday in the city clerk's office inside City Hall on Main Street.

The party primaries will be May 7, followed by runoffs on May 21 if needed. The general election is June 4.

Those elected will take office on July 1.

At press time Tuesday, only one person had qualified for Mayor though two others had publicly announced that they would be candidates.

Incumbent Mayor James A. Young, a Democrat, is seeking a second term.

Though they have not officially qualified, Incumbent Ward 1 Alderman Joe Tullos and incumbent Ward 2 Alderman Roy White have announced their intentions to run as Republican candidates for mayor.

Tullos and White were previously elected as Democrats.

Other candidates qualifying include:

Alderman-at-large: Leroy Clemons (D), Willie Jackson (R) and Jerry W. Smith (D). Incumbent Alderman-at-large Janice Payne is not seeking another term.

Ward 1 Alderman: Laura Bailey (R), Judy Caverhill (R), Josh Gamblin (R), Woodrow Reed (R) and Martha Burnside Tatum (D).

Ward 2 Alderman: Jim Fulton (R) and Wright Griffis (R).

Ward 3 Alderman: James Tatum (D) and incumbent Ronnie Jenkins (D).

Ward 4 Alderman: Mary G. Griffin (D), Bobbie Jackson (D), incumbent Cecil Nichols (D) and Rudolph Tatum (D).
