Classes start next week at area schools and one first grade teacher is already anticipating a great year.

Students will return to school next Wednesday at Philadelphia Public Schools and on Thursday, Aug. 8 at Neshoba County School.

Classes at Choctaw Tribal Schools also begin next Wednesday.

In recent weeks, teachers in all school districts have been preparing rooms and lesson plans to accommodate students' learning including Lindsay Garner.

Garner, a first grade teacher at Neshoba Central, said her classroom motto is "by learning to read, they always succeed."

Garner encourages students to read and become better readers through guided reading and the Marie Carbo recording method.

Dr. Carbo pioneered a technique over 25 years ago to audio-record written text in a way that teaches students how to read and improve reading comprehension.

Garner using these activities allows students to actually hear the words being said while students are reading.

Another activity that Garner feels is important to students' reading is the Accelerated Reader (AR) program.

"I push AR. It is a wonderful and useful tool," she said. "It also incorporates reading at home."

Garner is already anticipating a great year in her classroom at NCES.

"Parents will see a lot of growth in first because these students go from being a kindergartener to a big second grader," she said.

Garner wants her students to be confident in their abilities, noting that she sees many students who lack the much needed confidence.

"I want them to not be scared to ask questions for stuff they do not know, and I want them to always try their best," she said.
