The Philadelphia Fire Department recently assisted Newton County with a recovery effort at Turkey Creek Water Park after a man drowned.

Chief Pierce Clark said he received a call from Steve Baggett, the Emergency Management Director for Newton County, about the drowning shortly after 7 p.m. on Friday, June 20.

Clark was told that a man had attempted to swim from the beach to the campsite, approximately 100 yards, and had not made it across.

"He hadn't been seen since," the chief said. "I don't know why he did it."

They weren't sure if they would need the dive team but we started getting ready anyway, Clark said.

Once they got the call to go out the seven man dive team, including Clark, left and by 9:15 they had arrived and launched the boat.

"At around 9:30 [p.m.] we saw the body on our scanner and by 9:45 we had retrieved it," Clark said. "This is what we're trained to do."
