Three women and a juvenile were charged with grand larceny after selling a car for salvage in an attempt to earn enough money to pay a friend's jail fine, the authorities said.
Sharon Cumberland, 37, 11481 Road 266; Jessica A. Alcorn, 26, of 114 Fisher Lane, Hickory; Ashley Thompson, 27, of Mississippi 486; and a juvenile were charged with grand larceny, Sheriff's Investigator Kevin Baysinger said.
The four are charged with taking a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu to a salvage shop where they obtained $323.40 on Wednesday, July 24 at around 10:30 a.m., Baysinger said.
The car was parked at a vacant lot at the intersection Mississippi 539 and 486, he said.
"They tied a chain to it and drug it with a flat tire to Scotty's [Scotty's Recycling and Salvage on Columbus Avenue]," Baysinger said.
While the vehicle was not destroyed, the top had been torn off at the scrap yard, he said.
Baysinger said that the group took the car in an attempt to get bail money for a friend.
