MARCH 1, 1940

From present indications, a good crowd will be on hand at Longino at 8 o’clock Friday night when the juniors present “Lena Rivers” as their class play. Mrs. J.P. B.ass is director of the play and the cast is composed of Laura Fulton, Garland Deweese, Christine Barham, Lorene McAdory, Hazel Hatcher, Jack Burt, Eugene Petty, Shirely Vowell, Sara Hatcher, Howard Duett, Tilford McDonald, Doris Young, and Leon Tucker.

 

MARCH 3, 1950

Congressman William M. Colmer of the Sixth District of Mississippi, has been invited to address a joint session of the State Legislature. Colmer paid the major role in successfully defeating the FEPC measure in Congress. The concurrent relsoluation pointed to the “resounding defeat” of the FEPC bill in Congress, and praised the work of Comer and other Mississippi Representatives.



MARCH 10, 1960

Shirley Farrish, Virginia Hamilton, Lynda Hardy, Glenda Stokes, and Barbara Pau, Pat Green, Mary Ann Jones, Pauline Burton, and Martha Melton are all training to become nurses. These Neshoba County girls are at five different schools. Miss Stokes, graduate of Bond High School is training at St. Dominics. Miss Farrish, graduate of Philadelphia High School, is at the University of Mississippi, Miss Brooks, Miss Hardy, and Miss Green are graduates at Philadelphia High School and are at Baptist Hospital in Jackson. Miss Jones, graduate of Bloomo High School is at Matte Hersseas. Miss Burton, graduate of Union High School is at University Hospital.
 

MARCH 5, 1970

Charles Slaughter has been selected as Star Student. He is a senior at Philadelphia High School. Slaughter is the seventeen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lavon Slaughter. He received the American Legion Award; Activities Award; lettered two years in football and track; lettered three years as basketball manager. He plans to attend Mississippi State University in the Fall.

 

MARCH 6, 1980

Dorman Sam captured top honors in the Meridian Parks and Recreation Free Throw Contest. In addition to winning the free throw contest in his age group, Sam won the overall free throw contest by hitting 20 out of 20 free throws.



MARCH 7, 1990

Christopher Coats won the local and state Elks Hoop Shoot in the 10-11 year old division. He is ten years old and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Coats Jr. He will now advance to the Regionals. Christopher made 22 out of 25 free throws. 



MARCH 1, 2000

Danielle Jones was elected Mississippi Beta Club President. She attends Philadelphia High School as a junior. She is the daughter of Norman and Marcia Moore. She is an honor student at PHS. Also, a member of the basketball team and numerous other extra-curricular activities.



MARCH 3, 2010

Justin Anderson, of Philadelphia, finished in second place for the 2009-2010 Arenacross Tour Quad Novace class racing season. Brewer McGee, also of Philadelphia, finished first place for the 2009-2010 Arenacross Tour Quad Open class racing season.
