JUNE 2, 1939

Clifton Clemons, of Hopewell High School won the public speaking contest. He spoke on “Agriculture- The Backbone of Civilization.” Clayton Moore, Birdell Seales, Jessie M. Backstrom and Clifton Clemons won in the contest of quartet singing. 

 

MAY 27, 1949

Mary Margaret Yates, Nancy Elizabeth Bridges, Sara Frances Peebles, and Etta Frances Gillis, all of Philadelphia will receive degrees from Mississippi State College for Women. Misses Yates, Bridges, and Peebles will receive Bachelor of Science degrees while Miss Gillis will be awarded a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics.



JUNE 4, 1959

Promotion of Major Max T. Beall, son of Mrs. T. B. Beall of Philadelphia, to lieutenant colonel. The colonel is serving at the highest echelon of one of the nation’s largest major air commands. Beall is a Mississippi native and graduated from Philadelphia High School.

 

JUNE 5, 1969

Judy Leigh, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Leigh, has been named Outstanding Senior Girl in the Philadelphia High School band by the Band Parents Organization. Don Tullos, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Tulloshas has been selected Outstanding Senior Boy.

 

MAY 31, 1979

Jayne Slaughter was named Neshoba County’s Miss Hospitality. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lavon Slaughter. Miss Slaughter will compete in the state pageant in July.



  MAY 24, 1989

Jamie Stokes, a seventh grade student at Leake Academy, was presented the seventh grade science, social studies and geography awards during Awards Day. She also received the citizenship award for the seventh through ninth grades. Miss Stokes is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Stokes of Philadelphia. 



MAY 26, 1999

The Neshoba Central High School Future Farmers of America tractor operation and maintenance team recently won first place in the FFA East Central Federation Tractor Operation and Maintenance contest.



JUNE 3, 2009

Leake Academy graduate Brian Saxon of Philadelphia made one final appearance as a Rebel in the Mississippi Private School Association AA-AAA All-Star game at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson.
