JULY 29, 1938

Construction work has been completed on the new grammar school building. Mr. W.L. Perry, contractor in charge, states that it is one of the finest school buildings in the state, containing approximately 21,000 square feet of floor space, with 144,000 lbs. of reinforcing steel in the concrete.

JULY 30, 1948

Judge Malcolm B. Montgomery of Yazoo City was this week appointed associate justice of the State Supreme Court by Gov. Fielding L. Wright. Judge Montgomery will succeed Chief Justice Sydney Smith who passed away. Judge Montgomery and Judge Percy Lee are the contenders for the permanent position which will be decided at the election.

JULY 24, 1958

Robert Broussard, Philadelphia, is one of the winners of a $75 contest conducted by Mechanic Illustrated magazine, the publication announced today. A list of 361 winners in the contest appears in the August issue. Mr. Broussard’s prize is No. 192, a fishing outfit from Garcia.

JULY 25, 1968

Michael S. Clark, son of Mrs. Bonnie Clark of Jackson and the late James C. Clark of Philadelphia, received a four year ROTC Scholarship to the college of his choice from Third Army. The scholarship includes the payment of all fees, book expenses, and room rent plus fifty dollars per month. Clark attended Jackson Central High School and was the 1967-68 battalion commander of the Central ROTC, was recognized as Central’s Rotarian for December and received the Danforth Award. He served his senior class as President and was named to the Central High School Hall of Fame.

JULY 27, 1978

Sellers Cole has been recognized for being an Outgoing President. Cole receives an Outgoing Presdient’s pin from Mrs. Jo Ann Terrell for his involvement in the Neshoba County Unit of the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Terrell is the State Field Representative for the American Cancer Society.

JULY 27, 1988

The office of the United States Senator Thad Cochran recently announced the selection of Jessica Yoste to be a page during the summer of 1989 in his Washington, D.C. office. Miss Yoste is the daughter of Col. and Mrs. Florian H. Yoste III of Oxford and the granddaughter of Mrs. Morris Perry of Philadelphia. She attends Oxford High School where she will be a junior during the upcoming school year.

JULY 15, 1998

Brooks Bryan signed a free agent contract with an independent baseball team, the Evansville, Ind. Otters of the Frontier League. Bryan is a recent graduate of Mississippi State University where he earned an outstanding record with the Bulldogs. He is the son of Sparky and Anita Bryan.

JULY 23, 2008

Morgan Bailey and Samuel McKay were named to MS Baptist All-State Youth Choir. They toured with the choir during June. They are both seniors at Philadelphia High School. Bailey represented Salem Baptist Church in the choir and McKay represented First Baptist Church.
