A 23-year-old Philadelphia police officer responding to a call for help from Neshoba County Sheriff’s deputies died when her patrol car hit a light pole and flipped several times near the Beacon Street Baptist Church, the authorities said.

Police officer Leann Simpson died as a result of the single-car wreck shortly after 2 a.m. on west Beacon Street, according to Philadelphia Police Chief Grant Myers.

Sheriff’s deputies were on a traffic stop on Mississippi 16 past Dancing Rabbit Golf Club and 911 Communications could not make contact with the deputies and she was responding.

“Weather conditions were a factor,” said Myers.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Leann was an outstanding young officer with a promising career,” he said. "Our law enforcement community is devastated,”

Communications requested PD units to check on the deputies. Officer Simpson was responding when the accident occurred.

The cause of the wreck is still under investigation, Myers said. Simpson had been with Philadelphia PD for 15 months.
