The 3-year-old girl struck by an SUV Thursday night in what authorities said was a hit-and-run at a west end shopping center has died, her family said and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians has confirmed.
Kayzlyn Thomas of the Conehatta community died about 10 a.m. today in University Medical Center.
Police Investigator Marsha Bavetta said the young girl was struck by what was believed to be a dark Trailblazer.
The incident occurred in the Gamestop parking lot off South Lewis Avenue at 5:40 p.m. Thursday.
The girl was walking with her parents when the vehicle came through, Bavetta said, noting that the driver is believed to be a woman.
"She didn't call in and report the accident," Bavetta said.
The child was transported to Neshoba County General Hospital by the parents before being airlifted to the University Medical Center in Jackson.
Bavetta asks anyone who might have witnessed the accident to call the police at 601-656-2131.
The child's parents thanked those who have been praying for their daughter.
"We want to say thank you to all the people praying for our dear daughter and ask that you continue to send prayers her way," Keantray Thomas and Skyler Lewis said.
"Our daughter, being the fighter she has always been, is right now fighting for her life. Her condition at this moment is not good.
"We, along with our extended family, have been by her side and will continue to be for as long as it takes. Again, thank you to those who have kept her in their thoughts and prayers."
