The Neshoba County man who was shot and killed by law enforcement Thursday morning after he apparently set his house in the Burnside community on fire and pointed a gun at firefighters has been identified.

The man has been identified as Charles Edwin "P.J." Nickels, 35, of 11041 Road 836, according to Neshoba County Sheriff's Department Investigator Ralph Sciple.

Neshoba County Sheriff Tommy Waddell said the man set the fire and when first responders arrived he pulled a gun on a utility worker and firefighters.

“We went in to try and arrest him,” Waddell said. “He was armed. He pointed the gun in our direction and he was shot.”

Two people on the scene told told a reporter he served in Afghanistan and had been distraught.
